“What VCs care about…” says Founder of Color, Bill Nguyen

“Will this person, this team, do everything in their power—persist in the rough times—to make me money and more?”

Yes. We will.  But is that all you care about?

I hoped that not all VCs were like this.  I hoped Bill was wrong, though his insight does have some merit.  We all have dreams.  And after talking to a friend who works at a VC firm,  some VCs and Investors care about money.  But there are some out there that focus on helping us make our dreams reality.

You can find us here.  If you like to play hard to get, no worries.  We’ll find you soon.

Time to Laser Focus

Balance of Talking & Doing

When we entered college, all we did was talk. We talked and ideated about how amazing our products would be. We never started doing.

Tired of not taking any action, we entered this summer with the primary intention of doing— creating. That’s what we’ve been doing.

But we’ve lacked balance. We’ve been a rocket launcher. Firing away and plowing through everything.

Now that the close is clear, we’re going to be a sniper rifle and laser focus.

Balance. Laser focus.

Digging a Hole Before Building a Castle

Recently, one my fraternity brothers, who is 1 year deep in his Mission Trip, said, “You have to dig a hole before you can build a castle.”

True. I knew this. Or I thought I did. I just never thought the hole was this deep.

I’m a Behavior Designer.  As much as I want to contribute to our team technically, my strengths lay in the psychology of getting users [to do what we want].

However, I’ve learned that when your company is short on engineers — you contribute in any way possible.  This is my hole.  And it’s big.  A non-technical founder, learning to code.

Thankfully we choose our team carefully.  Our Engineering Yoda is understanding, patient, and willing to teach.  Aligned values, strong trust, and chemistry are key.

People are key. I look forward to building and unlocking
our Castle.

Things I’ve learned while at Stanford

- There are 3 S’s in life. And that is all.
- Do not urinate in public.
- Be aware of “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch your back”; trades of equal value are a must, but a delay in the trade can occur.
- Remain “in the zone”, but know there are larger worlds beside the work you’re doing. Vision is key for success.
- Do all that you can.

Great Places to Work (on Stanford Campus)

Living on the prettiest campus means we should take advantage of what we have. Here’s a short list of a few places we’ve tried in our quest to liven up our daily work environment.

  • Y2E2 3rd Floor Balcony overlooking the Engineering Quad
  • GSB Cafe view of the entire business school
  • Old Union (large and comfy couches)

Have yet to try:

  • Oval/Quad
  • Any field
  • Tressider

Feel free to give us some suggestions.

We’re Going After Our Dream.

This is our story.
